Healing from the Inside Out

Nina Tilka

As a psychologist, my approach is rooted in a combination of scientific evidence, practical strategies, and a deep understanding of the spiritual and relational dimensions of healing. I tend to blend attachment-based therapy, solution-focused interventions, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to create a holistic, client-centered approach that empowers individuals to live more fulfilling and balanced lives. I do participate in ongoing education and training in order to stay as up-to-date as possible with new therapeutic tools that might be useful for my clients. Each client’s plan for treatment is fairly unique to them based on the reason they are seeking out help, their goals for therapy, and their preferences.

Additionally, as a Christian, I recognize the profound impact that the faith life has on emotional health and vice versa. I am passionate about integrating this spiritual aspect of healing for Christian clients, understanding how cultural and religious factors shape mental health within Christian communities. Whether clients are navigating personal struggles, attachment difficulties, or faith-related challenges, my goal is to meet clients where they are and provide a therapeutic experience that is compassionate, practical, and spiritually enriching.

Building Healthier Relationships

Central to my therapeutic approach is the understanding that our early relationships profoundly shape who we are today. Attachment theory suggests that the bonds we form with primary caregivers early in life influence our emotional regulation, experience of relationships, and sense of self-worth throughout adulthood. By exploring attachment patterns, we can identify how these early dynamics might impact current relationships and emotional responses.

Together, with my clients, we will uncover any attachment-related challenges they may be facing and work toward developing healthier, more secure ways of relating to both self and others. Through this process, we will aim to foster a deeper sense of self-awareness, trust, and emotional resilience.

Bridging Insight with Action

I believe therapy should be actionable and grounded in everyday life. That’s why I use practical interventions tailored to clients’ unique needs. These interventions may include concrete tools for managing stress, improving communication, and building emotional resilience. The goal is not just to understand the root causes of their emotional struggles, but also to provide them with the skills and strategies needed to navigate daily life with greater ease and confidence.

By combining insights from attachment theory with real-world applications, my approach helps bridge the gap between understanding emotions and translating that understanding into meaningful action. We’ll work together to identify specific steps that empower clients to move toward what is important to them with greater clarity and confidence.

Embracing Emotional Flexibility

Another cornerstone of my therapeutic approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT emphasizes psychological flexibility—learning to be open to thoughts and emotions, even when they’re uncomfortable, rather than avoiding or suppressing them. The goal is not to rid the self of difficult emotions, but to learn to relate to them in a way that doesn’t control behavior or sense of self.

In ACT, we’ll explore core values and work together to ensure that client actions align with the kind of person they want to be and what truly matters to them. By accepting difficult feelings and committing to values-driven actions, clients will cultivate a sense of purpose and psychological flexibility that allows them to navigate life's challenges with greater peace and resilience.

Working with Christian Populations: Faith-Informed Therapy

As a Christian, I deeply understand the role that faith plays in the lives of many individuals and the unique challenges that Christians face in their walk with God. This understanding allows me to work effectively with Christian populations, no matter where they are on their spiritual journey.

Christian communities often face specific struggles, including reconciling faith with personal difficulties, navigating guilt or shame, or aligning spiritual values with everyday decisions. I strive to create a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can explore their mental health concerns through the lens of their faith. Whether they are struggling with doubt, seeking spiritual guidance, or simply trying to integrate their beliefs into their emotional healing, I am here to help clients navigate that intersection in a way that resonates.

Meeting Clients Where They Are: Culturally and Spiritually Sensitive Therapy

One of the most important aspects of my approach is that I meet clients where they are. Whether clients are new to their faith or have been walking with God for many years, I offer a therapeutic space that is sensitive to their spiritual and emotional needs. I understand that faith is central to many individuals' identities, and I am committed to integrating client values into our work together.

A Comprehensive, Compassionate Approach

Ultimately, my therapeutic approach is about empowering clients to live a life of purpose, resilience, and self-compassion. By blending attachment-based therapy, practical interventions, and ACT, I provide a comprehensive framework that supports healing on both an emotional and spiritual level. For Christian clients, I also offer a faith-informed perspective that respects client beliefs and integrates them into the therapeutic process.

I am here to walk alongside clients on their journey toward healing and growth, and consider it to be a privilege to sit with people in the process. Together, we’ll create a path that honors both their psychological well-being and spiritual values, helping build healthier relationships and navigate life's challenges.
